The evening of this past Saturday, Sept. 5 presented another thrilling international friendly at Inter Miami CF Stadium, with our Club’s venue in Fort Lauderdale hosting one of the biggest rivalries in Colombian fútbol as América de Cali took on Atlético Nacional. The matchup presented a high-intensity battle on the pitch, which saw Atlético Nacional seal a 3-1 victory.
The proceedings opened with an exhilarating first 10 minutes of play. Atlético Nacional got things started early on, with midfielder Edwin Cardona opening the scoring in the fourth minute with a first-time, right-footed finish from the left end of the box.
Fans of Los Diablos Rojos didn’t have to wait long to celebrate a goal of their own, though, as Jhon Murillo equalized for América de Cali in the seventh minute with a tidy backheel finish from inside the penalty area.
The emotions stayed high as La Máquina Verde reclaimed the lead moments after, as Ian Poveda found the back of the net in the eighth minute with a grounded left-footed hit from the top of the box.
Cardona secured his brace on the night in the 20th minute with a rocket from the penalty spot to extend the lead for Atlético Nacional.
The scoreline would ultimately remain unchanged throughout the remainder of the international friendly for Atlético Nacional to clinch the win.
The match, which featured two of the sides with the most passionate fan bases in Colombian fútbol, marked the third time Atlético Nacional played an international friendly at Inter Miami CF Stadium. Nacional first faced fierce rivals Millonarios FC in 2023 in a match that resulted in a narrow 1-0 defeat, before taking on Peruvian side Club Universitario de Deportes for a 1-1 draw in 2024. For América de Cali and their supporters, meanwhile, the occasion presented their first-ever visit to one of Inter Miami CF’s homes.
